Markouh Castle – A Historical Fortress in Ramsar
Markouh Castle is one of the prominent historical landmarks of Ramsar County in Mazandaran Province, situated atop a mountain of the same name in the Katalom region. This castle was registered as a national heritage site of Iran on March 15, 2001, under registration number 3484.
History and Origins
The exact construction date of Markouh Castle is unknown, but historical and architectural evidence suggests it was originally built during the Sassanid era, and later restored and used during the Islamic period, especially from the 3rd to the 8th century AH. Some sources also indicate that the castle was taken over by the Ismailis in the 6th century AH.
Architecture and Structure
Markouh Castle covers an area of about 600 square meters and is mainly built using stone, saruj (a traditional mortar), and gypsum. Only four surrounding walls and supporting towers remain from the original structure. The castle was designed to accommodate around 100 soldiers and offers a full 360-degree view of the surrounding areas. From the top of the fortress, one can enjoy stunning views of the Caspian Sea, the cities of Tonekabon and Ramsar, and the Alborz Mountains.
Location and Access
Located at an elevation of about 217 meters above sea level, reaching the castle requires climbing approximately 300 steps. This strategic elevation made it ideal for surveillance and defense in the past.
Name Origin and Cultural Significance
The name “Markouh” may have roots in Mithraism (the ancient worship of Mithra), where “Mar” (meaning mother) symbolized Mitra or Mehr (sun god). It is possible that Markouh Mountain was considered a sacred place in ancient times before becoming a military fortress.
Visiting Tips
Entry to Markouh Castle is free of charge.
The best time to visit is during spring and summer, when the weather is mild and pleasant.
In winter, access can be difficult due to extreme cold and icy conditions.
A typical visit takes about 1 to 2 hours.
