Barnier on the brink: is this the end for France's Fifth Republic? With Robert Tombs and John Keiger

France is in turmoil. Today, Michel Barnier faces a vote of no confidence, triggered after he used special powers to push through a social security budget bill without a vote by MPs. If successful, the vote of no confidence will likely mean the end of his premiership and could call into question the stability of the Fifth Republic – and, with it, Emmanuel Macron.

Waiting in the wings – and prepared to vote in favour of the motion – are firebrands from both ends of the French political spectrum: Marine Le Pen from the National Rally and Jean-Luc Mélenchon from France Unbowed. How can Macron avoid a full-on constitutional crisis?

Will Kingston is joined by Cambridge professors Robert Tombs and John Keiger to discuss.
