The angular momentum eigenfunctions can be derived by some complicated change of variables and messing about with angular momentum operators. Skipping most of the details and jumping to the punchline, the eigenfunctions are spherical harmonics. The eigenvalues from this approach are a little different than the results of the algebraic approach, a premonition of spin, the subject of the next lecture.
