Due to the construction of roads, waterways and railways, natural areas in the Netherlands have become fragmented. As a result, animals living in the wild have become more and more stuck in unnaturally small habitats. This weakens nature.Therefore, natural connections are being made. Not only well-visible ecoducts, but also and more often small measures such as eco-culverts, faunatunnels, walking facilities beneath bridges and onto steep canal banks.

In 2018 the Dutch national multi-annual defragmentation program (MJPO) will be completed. This is being celebrated during the IENE2018 conference in Eindhoven. Since 2004, this program has been responsible for the construction of faunapassages within the national infrastructure. Rijkswaterstaat and ProRail worked together with the provinces and regional nature managers who also construct faunapassages. A great moment to put all the big faunapassages on a map. It immediately reflects the logical connection with the Dutch Nature Network. And visualized in this way, the importance of natural connections becomes almost tangible clear at once.
