Anti-nuclear campaigner Steve Barwick speakers to BBC Looks South about the 40th anniversary of the mass civil disobedience protest at USAF Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire.

More than 5,000 people took part in the “peace blockade” over four days between 31 May and 3 June 1983. It was entirely peaceful but by its conclusion, 752 people had been arrested – one of the highest numbers of people ever detained at a peace protest.

40 years on, nuclear weapons states are moving down the path of nuclear modernisation and rearmament. The US-run Lakenheath airbase in Suffolk has been recently upgraded to store the new B61-12 guided nuclear bomb and is a likely destination for the bomb's deployment across Europe.
