When it comes to corporate presentations, shadows are frowned upon and are often dismissed as decorative fluff or relic of the past. There are good reasons for this. The most important one is, Shadows fall under the realm of 3D which is hard to grasp for people without art background. They are like music. We all know what good music sounds like but coming up with our own music…that’s an entirely different thing.

Add to that, PowerPoint’s default shadow presets tend to be blunt instruments. Most of them come with harsh angles, unrealistic blur, and inconsistent lighting. These presets have not been updated to keep up with modern graphics standards. So when these effects get used as is, they can easily clutter a slide or distract from its message and frankly they just look bad. As a result, shadow get a bad rep and are shunned by companies at large.

That said, shadows are a fundamental aspect of art and graphic design. When applied with intention and finesse, shadows become a powerful design tool that can enhance clarity, hierarchy, and visual communication.
