SPRING HILL, Tenn (WZTV)- — Counter-protesters ushered in heated moments outside a townhall breakfast event, Saturday, where Republican Rep. Andy Ogles spoke to residents in Spring Hill.
The protest followed Ogles calling for the National Guard to be deployed to Nashville to help combat crime, this week, parallel to Washington, D.C.
“The FBI updated their statistics, and guess where Nashville is- Music City USA, an engine that runs on tourism- eighth. Eighth most violent city in America,” Ogles said during the discussion.
Demonstrators gathered outside Big Bad Breakfast restaurant, voicing strong opposition to Ogles’ stance on the National Guard, ICE sweeps, battling illegal immigration and his support for President Trump's recetly passed tax effort, the "Big Beautiful Bill."
Chants and signs could be heard and seen as Ogles addressed those attending inside. Despite the disruption, the congressman continued his remarks, and answering questions from the crowd.
Protesters outside told Fox 17 News they were not allowed to enter the event.
“As I walked in, (an employee) said, ‘I’m sorry, you can’t come in,’” said protester Mindy Sontag. “I said, ‘I made a reservation.’ She said, ‘You cannot come in. I’m afraid you’re going to be hostile.’”
Ogles briefly went outside to address the demonstrators, but the exchange quickly escalated into shouting and some vulgar hand gestures on the protesters' side, with little dialogue.
Protesters said the congressman rarely holds events that welcome opposing viewpoints.
