The  all33 BackStrong C1 Chair is an office chair that stands out from the rest. No mesh, no space-age look, no gleaming aluminum, no half-dozen adjustment knobs and levers. Instead it looks like a cross between an office chair and a lounge chair — cushioned, on castors, with plenty of black plastic on display, and a bit of a retro vibe. Designed by “LA’s leading chiropractor” and an industrial designer with BMW credits, this chair uses a unique approach with an independently-tilting seat that promotes natural movement of the pelvis and back when seated. It’s claimed to help users “feel energized, find flexibility, gain back and core strength, and achieve greater productivity.” Those are big claims, and all33 backs them with a slew of celebrity endorsements. The BackStrong C1 has also been featured on Shark Tank. The BackStrong C1 is priced at the higher end in terms of office chairs. Its MSRP is $1299, although that is currently reduced to $799 on All33’s website. Still not an inexpensive chair. Is it worth it? All33 says that the BackStrong C1 is “built with care.” That may be, but my review unit certainly wasn’t packaged with care. The box it arrived in was in pretty good shape, but inside it was a mess of cardboard, foam and components that had been free to bounce around during shipping. Nothing was damaged and there are very few parts to assemble, so sorting it out wasn’t a problem. With my house full of family either working from home or remote learning plus a menagerie of pets roaming around, I assembled the chair out on the front porch. It took maybe five or six minutes and the only tool required is supplied. Once put together, the chair seemed solid enough and glided smoothly on its castors. The seat part of the chair moves independently, what the company calls Sit in Motion technology. This is the key feature compared to standard office and task chairs which may offer adjustable lumbar support, but keep you sitting in the same upright position. With this seat, you are prevented from slouching, even when you lean back because it pivots with you. It’s claimed to cause your vertebrae to “stack into ideal posture.” That’s the chiropractor contribution to the chair. I have to say, the sensation of sitting in it is different, but not weird. I frequently suffer from lower back pain, and I did find that seemed to fade when sitting in the BackStrong C1 for a bit. The company suggests giving it at least 10 days for the full effect. The chair is available with fabric-covered upholstery in multiple colors. My sample was black vegan leather. It looked nice enough and was well-padded, but that material is thin; my cat’s claws punctured it like butter. If you have pets who might jump up on the chair, go with the cloth. Are celebrities enough to convince you to buy this chair? All33 is all-in on the celebrity endorsement angle, with Justin Bieber, Tom Hanks, Cindy Crawford, John Cleese, Shaquille O’Neal, and more singing its praises.
