This free youtube mini course is a free sample from the Introduction to Marxism, self paced, online course. It's Unit 4 in the overall course, this unit is is dedicated to the Communist Manifesto. To grasp this document in its full depth, we need to understand the historical context in which it was written, it's purpose, the theory of history and crisis it describes, it's implicit political theory, and the fields of revolutionary and evolutionary Marxism that have come about subsequently. To this effect, I present the 7 lessons in this free mini course.

Lesson Description:
In this lesson, we take a deep dive into Shlomo Avineri’s interpretation of Marx—one of the most influential and misunderstood readings of Marxist theory.

We begin by introducing Avineri himself and the three core themes that shape his Marx: non-determinism, a plurality of paths to a workers’ state, and Aufhebung—the dialectical process of preserving, transforming, and transcending existing social forms.

From there, we examine Avineri’s critique of utopian socialism, showing why abstract ideals and blueprints can’t substitute for an analysis grounded in real historical conditions. We then turn to his critique of accelerationism, and why simply letting capitalism “run its course” is neither politically neutral nor historically guaranteed to produce socialism.

With that foundation, we trace Avineri’s account of the path to a workers’ state: beginning with capitalism’s objective structural tendencies, moving through subjective mediation—class consciousness, organization, and institutions—and exploring concrete routes to political power, including universal suffrage and democratic struggle.

Finally, we answer the central question: what does a workers’ state actually do? We break this down into three interrelated goals: the political dismantling of bourgeois power, the economic socialization of production, and human emancipation culminating in the eventual transcendence of the state itself.

By the end of this lesson, you’ll see how Avineri transforms Marx from a theory of historical inevitability into a practical, dynamic framework for revolutionary strategy—a guide not just to understanding capitalism, but to changing it.
