**Romance, rivalry, and friendship — three things that Naruto struggled to balance when it came to female characters. But Boruto: Two Blue Vortex has quietly changed that forever.

In this video, I’m breaking down why Sarada and Sumire’s so-called “romantic rivalry” is one of the most underrated aspects of Boruto’s storytelling — and why it’s proof that Ikemoto understands female characters in ways Kishimoto himself admitted he struggled with.

Kishimoto once confessed that Sakura Haruno was a character he failed to fully develop, saying he found it difficult to understand the heart of a young woman. He also admitted that when writing Sarada for Naruto Gaiden and Boruto: The Movie, he had to study girl-focused books and magazines just to get her emotions right. These quotes show exactly why Naruto’s female cast often felt sidelined when love came into play.

But in Boruto, Sarada and Sumire’s bond proves different. Despite both being in love with Boruto, they refuse to let their feelings destroy their friendship. Even when jealousy and gaslighting came into play, Ikemoto didn’t reduce them to stereotypes.
