How to nebulize pet rats

A nebulizer may be used to help clear a rat's respiratory tract by loosening phlegm or to administer certain types of medicine.

You will need a nebulizer, nebulizing saline, a carry cage, towels and sometimes additional medication.

Fill up the medicine cup with about 5 ml of nebulizing saline and connect to the compressor. Place the compressor on a towel to lessen the sound and as far away as possible from the cage. Connect the mouthpiece to the cage and use another towel to cover the cage.

Place your rat inside the cage. Another rat for company and snacks may ensure it remains calmer during the nebulizing process. Cover the cage and nebulize for about 10 minutes. Immediately stop nebulizing if your rat seems to be in distress.

Rats may sound worse directly after nebulizing due to phlegm being expelled, but breathing should improve within hours. Nebulize 1 - 2 times a day until your rat's respiratory tract is clear. Consult your vet if doesn't improve within a day or two.

Medication like Duolin or Bisolvon 0.2 may be used as a bronchodilator or even antibiotics as prescribed by your vet.

Duolin 1/2 ampule to 5 ml saline
Bisolvon - 0.25 ml (5 drops) to 5 ml saline

WARNING:
Fluids in lungs may be caused by a heart condition. Do not use bronchodilators if your rat has a heart condition and always consult your vet.

Wash the mouthpiece and medicine cup after every use and disinfect with F10. Allow to dry completely before storing away.
