MOOCs and Open Education is a new book that explores issues relating to open educational resources (OER) and massive open online courses (MOOC). Recent technological advancements in online learning have made it possible for people all around the globe to participate in open classes online. These MOOCs are called massive because they do not have any limit on the number of learners that can participate. MOOC classes are called open because MOOCs were originally an idea from the Open Education Resources community. MOOCs are generally free for students but they do not always lead to formal accreditation.

Distance learning technology is improving so quickly that elearning organizations must deal with a variety of issues today. How can educators make sure that the classes provided by these MOOCs meets an acceptable level of quality? How can students make sure that the teachers are properly credentialed? What business models do organizations including MITx, Coursera, edX, Udemy, and Udacity use for these MOOCs? How can quality control standards be defined and maintained for online education? How can MOOCs deal with low student motivation and high dropout rates?

As learning technology becomes more digital there is a growing need to understand how these MOOCs are being conducted. Academics, scientists, public servants, and numerous other stakeholders want to understand these new open education experiments. Everyone wants to debate how massive open online courses can be improved.

To meet this demand for knowledge MOOCs and Open Education offers a critical analysis of open education resource issues. The MOOCs and Open Education book also discusses the controversies associated with these OERs. This edited collection shares interesting research findings and provides pragmatic recommendations.
