Side by Side Comparison of Different Imaging Techniques

Описание к видео Side by Side Comparison of Different Imaging Techniques

What a difference proper illumination and different imaging techniques make! This side by side comparison video of a Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) process demonstrates the effect of no active illumination versus applying CAVILUX laser illumination in different imaging techniques. As you can see, the difference from one to the next is quite remarkable.

These videos were captured at 12,000 frames per second and exported fps is 60. To get a better understanding of the scale of the footage - the torch tip diameter is 21.1 mm and the wire diameter is 1.2 mm.

The imaging setups:

↖️ On top left is the typical view of welding recorded using a high-speed camera with band-pass filters. While there are some visible points when the arc strikes, the rest is mostly darkness which makes it quite hard to identify any fine details in the meltpool.

↗️ On top right is our typical setup of CAVILUX laser illumination with a high-speed camera. Here we focused a single CAVILUX laser on the torch and used our band-pass filters to filter out the process light from the footage.

↙️ Bottom left we have added another CAVILUX laser to the previous setup, and used the Shadowgraphy imaging technique. Using 2 lasers this way provides you a bit more details from the process such as spatter and their trails.

↘️ Bottom right is a Schlieren imaging setup with 2 of our CAVILUX lasers. This is the most detail-oriented setup you can have and it provides you with immense process details such as of protection gas flow. It also makes almost every single spatter visible in addition to being able to track the directions of the spatter.

Videos were taken in cooperation with the Laser Application Laboratory (LAL) of Tampere University, Finland.

Used camera: Phantom v2640 provided by Citius Imaging Ltd.
