Welcome to Daily Overdose! What are the things that you fear? The fears that have been keeping you from living your dreams, from doing the things you’d like to do? Every time your inner voice speaks of something new, fear is there to squash it. The big problem in the world today is that too many people let fear always win these inner conflicts.
What if you don’t chase your dreams? What if you don’t stand up for yourself? What if you don’t step up to the plate and take that challenge? You have no idea of the breathtaking future that’s on its way to you, pleading, “Please, let me through.”
When you decide that you are good enough, that you give yourself permission to have it all, fear becomes a force for evolution. Fear is good—it’s our instincts and radar, keeping us alive. But it can also keep us in our comfort zone, where nothing grows. Life happens outside the comfort zone.
Let's take some steps to restructure that fear. Increase our visions of ourselves, and boost our self-esteem. Self-esteem means confidence and satisfaction in oneself. Look at your life right now. Whatever you’ve done up to this point, your life is working as a result of the kind of person you’ve become. You have to be fearless and believe completely in that feeling inside you.
It’s all a mindset. How badly do you want something? Nothing tastes better than when you’ve earned it. So, start now. If not now, when? If not you, then who? Someone else is starting right now. As long as you’ve got air in your lungs, you have an opportunity to improve your situation.
Human up. Accept the challenge. Change your associations. Commit to a lifetime of small wins, even when they seem meaningless. Are you in a position to quit, or to go harder, to go stronger? Are you willing to dig deep in your life, to suffer and push forward?
Instead of boxing yourself in, thinking about all the ways something could go wrong, think about all you could do if you take action. Common fears like failure, poverty, and loss of money can paralyze us, causing us to avoid risk and reject opportunities. These fears, and others like the fear of embarrassment, ridicule, or rejection, hold us back throughout life.
When fear strikes, it often feels physical. Your heart pounds, your mouth goes dry, your stomach churns. This fear paralyzes action. Fear can make come true that which you fear, even if only in your imagination.
To conquer fear, start by changing your behavior. Act the part of the person you want to become. Gradually, the old fearful person will fade away. Think of Dr. Frankl, who, even in a concentration camp, controlled his attitude and found freedom in his mind.
Self-discipline is crucial. Churchill said, “Courage is rightly considered the foremost of the virtues, for upon it all others depend.” Everyone is afraid, but the brave confront and act despite their fear, while the coward is controlled by it. All fears are learned, so they can be unlearned.
Identify a fear in your life and resolve to deal with it immediately. Confront it head-on. Denial only causes stress and unhappiness. Shakespeare said, “Take arms against a sea of troubles and, by opposing, end them.” Fear’s companion is worry, and most worries never happen.
So, if there’s something you want to do, start now. Research it, get involved, and explore the possibilities. Strengthen your shortcomings, get the training you need, and start now. As George Washington Carver said, “Do what you can, where you are, with what you have.” Never be satisfied with where you are—always strive for more.
Most people tiptoe through life quietly and safely, but find out what you want and go after it as if your life depends on it. Because it does.
