How have the people of Gaza managed to buy food and survive through two long years of war, when there has been so little food and money to go around?

Until the fragile ceasefire came into force, the choices were bleak: pay exorbitant prices for goods in the market, hand over up to 50% in commission just to withdraw cash, or risk your life at chaotic and deadly food distribution sites.

A famine was declared in parts of the territory back in August by UN-backed experts, who warned that more than half a million people were facing “catastrophic” conditions. Yet even with a ceasefire, Gazans remain trapped in a broken economy.
