Puffing Billy Lakeside Visitor Centre by TERROIR | 2022 Victorian Architecture Awards

COLORBOND® Award for Steel Architecture

Clad in Colorbond ‘Monument’ matt finish, the building resembles the signature iconic black steam locomotives and recedes into the shadows of native bushland as a silhouette backdrop to the hero that is the Puffing Billy Railway experience.

Straightline 406 Plain Pan Deck was used for both roof and wall planes and presents the building as a singular object between two landscape settings, especially on approach from uphill. Custom ridge flashings create unbroken standing seam ribs between wall and roof junctions that seamlessly connect the façade to the bushland behind. The regularity of the ribbed standing seam profile creates depth and visual interest through the length of shadows cast across the facade at varying times of the day.

The use of Straightline 406 with Bluescope Steel and the Colorbond finish was a significant design decision and aligned with the client, contractor and design team’s desire to source Australian made products.
