He is the runaway favourite to have a new government centre named after him, leading the field by 1,000 votes.

But Harry Baals, four-times Fort Wayne mayor in the 1930s and 50s, is unlikely to receive the honour - because his name could inspire too many jokes.

While voters in an online poll to christen the new building are, like past residents, keen fans of Mr Baals, it seems the city's current leaders are rather less enamoured with the popular mayor.

They think the name could make the Indiana city a laughing stock.

Deputy Mayor Beth Malloy said: 'We realise that while Harry Baals was a respected mayor, not everyone outside of Fort Wayne will know that.

'We wanted to pick something that would reflect our pride in our community beyond the boundaries of Fort Wayne.'

It is an issue of pronunciation. While Mr Baals, the city's longest-serving mayor, was proud to say his last name 'balls', his descendants have changed it to the more tactful 'bales'.

But the city has no problem with naming roads after the ex-mayor - there is already a Harry W. Baals Drive in Fort Wayne.

At the last count, the Harry Baals Government Center had received 1,388 votes in the online poll to name the new building, 200 E. Berry St.

It has won three times more votes than its nearest rival, the Eugene Johnson Memorial Center. Voters could select any name they wished in the poll, which closes on Friday.

Mr Baals was elected for three consecutive terms in the 1930s, and returned to politics in 1951 for a fourth term. He died in office in 1954.
