Sindhutai Sapkal, a social activist and Padma Shri awardee, died of a heart attack on 4 January, at the age of 74, in Pune. Sindhutai Sapkal was known as the ‘mother of orphans’ and ‘mai.’ She devoted her life to adopting and raising orphaned and abandoned children. Throughout her life, she raised nearly 1,500 orphans. For her social work, she received over 700 awards, including the Ahilyabai Holkar Award by the Maharashtra Government and the Nari Shakti Puraskar by the President of India.
