Nanomaterials have a unique characteristic that sets them apart from their bulk counterparts - a high surface-to-volume ratio. This means that most of the material is on the surface, with very little volume. Understanding this property is essential in designing technologies such as high-capacity batteries and seawater desalination systems that the world needs.
