In Dostoevsky’s novel “Crime and Punishment” the student Rodion Raskolnikov decides to see whether he is capable of a deed that would raise him above the “regular” people
He contemplates murder, but not for the sake of money, but to find out whether he is a trembling creature or whether he has the right.
Raskolnikov believes that the murder of a corrupt pawnbroker is the first step in his fight against the world’s evil.
But along with the pawnbroker, he kills her innocent sister.
Raskolnikov's theory crumbles. Even a thousand good deeds will never atone for one crime, especially murder.
His belief that the noble end justifies the gruesome means, drives the young man to commit a disgusting and despisable crime.
By killing the pawnbroker, he virtually kills himself.
By the end of the novel, Raskolnikov manages to find hope that by turning to God he may eventually attempt to redeem his soul.
