Jamaica vs USA : The U.S. Men’s National Team Jamaica vs USA rolls on to the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup Semifinals where it will face Jamaica on Wednesday. On the other side of the bracket, a Darren Mattocks penalty kick sent Jamaica through against Panama, while the United States suffered through a lackluster second half but survived Curaçao, 1-0.
The semifinals are familiar territory for Jamaica, which reached the championship match in the 2015 and 2017 Gold Cups. But the Reggae Boyz will be without reliable defender Damion Lowe, who is suspended from the match due to yellow-card accumulation.
They’ll face a U.S. men’s national team that epitomized “survive and advance” against Curaçao. Despite an electric Christian Pulisic, the U.S. couldn’t add to a 1-0 advantage and found itself out-possessed and out-shot in the second half.
Without midfielders Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams, the U.S. failed to generate much offense, and striker Josh Sargent squandered what chances he did have, including a point-blank shot that went wide in the 71st.
Since a 1969 defeat to Haiti at San Diego, the only U.S. home loss to a Caribbean team had been 2-1 to Jamaica in a 2015 Gold Cup semifinal at Atlanta. The Reggae Boyz beat the Americans for just the third time in 26 meetings, which have included 15 U.S. wins and eight draws.
Berhalter was hired in December and tasked with implementing a possession-oriented, attacking style. Jackson Yueill, a 22-year-old midfielder who is not eligible for the Gold Cup, started in his U.S. debut. Duane Holmes, a 24-year-old midfielder, made his debut in the 66th minute.
Joe Gyau, a 26-year-old forward from Silver Spring, Maryland, entered in the second half in his third international appearance and first since 2014.
Berhalter started a three-man back line that included Matt Miazga on the right, Omar Gonzalez in the center and Tim Ream on the left.
Antonee Robinson, making his seventh U.S. appearance, was active on the left. His clean header missed high after a Jamaica giveaway in the 43rd minute.
Djordje Mihailovic had the last chance for the U.S., a breakaway in stoppage time, but he took a poor touch and was unable to get off much of a shot.
Next up for the U.S. is one final friendly against Ecuador on June 9, with Berhalter promising earlier in the week that he’ll field a more first-choice lineup in the last tuneup before the Gold Cup opener against Guyana in St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 18.
