Liberal Senator Dave Sharma says Teal MPs often spent “upwards of $2 million per electorate” at the last federal election.

The Albanese government’s proposed electoral donations reform involves a cap of $20,000 per donor to each recipient and a cap on campaign spending of $800,000 for each electorate.

The crossbench has argued this will lead to a big advantage for the major parties.

“The Teals, in the last election, spent often upwards of $2 million per electorate,” Mr Sharma told Sky News Australia.

“They had donors writing cheques in the million dollars or more.

“I think they bought some legitimacy with that.”
