For a Time Such as This:
Esther’s Story

This is the story of how one woman brought education and clean water to a community in desperate need.

Esther persevered through many challenges and never gave up on the people of Bukedea, Uganda . She worked tirelessly to reopen the Kachabule Primary School, brought many teachers and volunteered her time as the head teacher to bring education back to the children.

She didn’t stop there…

Esther knew the people needed a clean water source to enable them to see lasting sustainable change.

She wrote many letters to the local water district and eventually her hard work and prayers were answered!

Our partners, The Ugandan Water Project (UWP) vetted the community as one of great need based on population, distance and quality of their current water source, as well as the community’s waterborne disease rates. UWP then began mobilizing the community by training them on proper sanitation and hygiene, helped them to form a water committee and create bylaws for sustainable well management.

UWP then built one of the most beautiful boreholes we have ever seen!

Ester says she is now working to upgrade the latrine systems as the school has grown exponentially in student attendance since the implementation of the borehole.

Esther says the biggest change she has seen is the change in the children’s kindness toward one another…

“When there is a problem or if a child is hurt, the children all band together to solve the problem, and they almost always find a way to solve it using clean water.”
