❓ What are condyloma?
Condyloma are growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) that primarily affect the genital and anal regions. In this video, expert colorectal consultant Mr Alex Leo, delves into the different types, how they are transmitted, and the factors that increase the risk of contracting them.

❓ How common is HPV?
HPV is the most commonly sexually transmitted infection worldwide, with 9 to 13% of the global population affected.
The majority of HPV infections in men and women are asymptomatic, but they can lead to long-term sequelae and mortality. Each year, more than 340 000 women die of cervical cancer (1). In men, HPV infection tends to manifest clinically as anogenital warts, which cause significant morbidity and increase HPV transmission rates (2,3). HPV infections are also associated with penile, anal and oropharyngeal cancers, which are commonly linked to HPV type 16 (4,5). The International Agency for Research on Cancer estimated that there were about 69 400 cases of cancer in men caused by HPV in 2018 (2). Source: https://www.who.int/news/item/01-09-2...

❓ Can condyloma (genital warts) lead to cancer?
While anal warts (Condyloma) themselves are not cancerous, they are caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can increase the risk of developing anal cancer. It's important to note that not everyone with anal warts will develop cancer, and the majority of anal warts do not lead to cancer. However, persistent infection with high-risk strains of HPV can potentially lead to changes in the cells of the anal region, increasing the risk of anal cancer over time. Regular medical check-ups, monitoring, and appropriate management of anal warts can help reduce the risk of complications.
