The White House has revised its factsheet on the US-India trade agreement by removing the references to pulses. It has also altered the language around digital services.
The factsheet that had been released by the White House on Tuesday had explicitly mentioned "certain pulses" among the products for which India would reduce or eliminate tariffs.
The statement had read and I quote: "India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on all US industrial goods and a wide range of US food and agricultural products, including dried distillers' grains (DDGs), red sorghum, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruit, certain pulses, soybean oil, wine and spirits, and additional products" . Unquote.
The updated version of the document released later on Tuesday itself, no longer carries any mention of pulses.
The new statement reads, and I quote, "India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on all US industrial goods and a wide range of US food and agricultural products, including dried distillers' grains (DDGs), red sorghum, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruit, soybean oil, wine and spirits, and additional products." Unquote.
It is worth noting here that India is the world's largest producer and consumer of pulses. Pulses that include lentils, chickpeas, and dry beans. In order to protect the interest of Indian farmers, the Indian government has imposed a whole lot of tariffs on American exports in these categories.
The revisions in the US factsheet decisively point to the fact that New Delhi has been successful in pushing back on these characterisations.
In addition to pulses, the U.S administration has also altered its wording around President Trump's claim about India's "commitment" to buying over $500 billion worth of U.S goods. NEWS9 explores.
