The Warehouse District, commonly known as the Rivertown Warehouse District, is a historic and evolving neighborhood situated along the Detroit River, just east of downtown. Once a bustling industrial hub filled with warehouses, factories, and shipyards, the area has undergone significant transformation over the years.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Rivertown was a center for maritime and industrial activity. Notably, starting in 1852, the site housed a busy shipyard where the Detroit Dry Dock Company, and later the Detroit Shipbuilding Company, built and installed steam engines and constructed vessels, contributing to Detroit's prominence in shipbuilding .
