In the heart of Jakarta, a city defined by its dynamic urban density and tropical climate, Coffer House by Gets Architects emerges as a refined expression of spatial discipline and contextual awareness. Designed by Gerard Tambunan, principal architect and founder of Gets Architects, the residence reflects the studio's longstanding commitment to crafting architecture that is both responsive and restrained. Rather than imposing form, the project engages its site and environment with deliberate precision, achieving a language of quiet confidence.
Coffer House is situated on a site of approximately 1,100 square meters, with a built-up area of around 783 square meters. The home is articulated through a series of controlled architectural gestures that prioritise the interplay between form, light, and material. Although the project’s full design details remain reserved from public release, the work can be interpreted through the lens of Gets Architects’ wider body of residential projects—each of which demonstrates a rigorous commitment to climate responsiveness, material honesty, and spatial clarity.
The firm’s approach is exemplified in projects such as the Rubic JGC Residence and Rumah RifBagus—homes that subtly challenge conventional spatial typologies by emphasising introverted living arrangements, layered circulation, and elemental material palettes. In these projects, architecture becomes less about surface articulation and more about the composition of spatial experiences, the modulation of natural light, and the integration of landscape.
In this context, Coffer House likely continues the studio’s pursuit of architecture as a contemplative medium. The name itself—“Coffer”—evokes a sense of spatial enclosure and geometric refinement. In architectural parlance, a coffer refers to a sunken panel, often employed in ceilings to create depth, shadow, and rhythm. Whether through literal interpretation or conceptual analogy, the project suggests an exploration of carved volume, recessed light, and structured serenity. Such elements would be consistent with Gets Architects’ tendency to explore tectonic balance and architectural stillness over ornamentation or spectacle.
The material language of the firm typically leans toward honest, tactile finishes—exposed concrete, local stone, timber, and smooth plaster—applied in a way that reinforces thermal comfort while anchoring the architecture to its tropical context. Spatial organisation often privileges inward-facing courtyards, shaded thresholds, and deep overhangs—devices that simultaneously negotiate privacy, climatic control, and visual continuity with the natural environment.
While Coffer House’s public footprint remains discreet, its presumed architectural posture aligns with a philosophy that defines all of Gets’ work: to find poetry in limitations and clarity through constraint. It is this ethos that positions the firm as one of Indonesia’s most thoughtful contributors to contemporary residential design. Their architecture speaks not through ostentation, but through balance—of light and shadow, solid and void, enclosure and openness.
Coffer House is less a declaration than a meditation—a space conceived with the awareness that great architecture does not demand attention but earns it through presence, proportion, and restraint.
