I just finished designing and building this Arduino (Mega 2560) powered front panel controller breadboard for my "MAX-SSB (homebrew SSB) transceiver and wanted to share what I have completed so far. This controller drives an Si5351 PLL board to provide the VFO and BFO oscillators for my homebrew RF deck based on the famous BITX design by OM Ashhar Farhan (VU2ESE) using TIA IF amps by Wes (W7ZOI). This controller is an updated version of the one I developed for my earlier ZX-SSB project, but has several improvements such as the use of a mini clone version of the Arduino Mega 2560, the use of thermistors (instead of 1N4148 diodes) to sense the temperature of the PA's final transistors, and an on board GPS linked frequency counter which can be used to precisely set the Si5351's main crystal clock calibration, a GPS real time clock showing local and UTC time, S-Meter, High and Low inject L.O. switching on the fly, et cetera. The "MAX" in the project name = [M]odular [A]mateur radio e[X]perimental. This was just a preview of the MAX-Project homebrew SSB transceiver series -- More to come... 73 Rick N3FJZ
