19th November 1966: In the mid-sixties Tottenham Hotspur epitomized the term 'Southern softies' for their inability to win matches in the north of England. In 1966/67 Spurs had begun losing home games as well so this as now become a very difficult trip to Hillsborough where thy meet Sheffield Wednesday. For Wednesday their problem has been scoring goals so they went out and spent £70,000 on John Ritchie from Stoke City who they would later sell back to following relegation in 1969. As a point of refence Spurs signed Terry Venables in the summer 1966 from Chelsea for £80,000. Venables was the only man to be capped by England at the time from Schoolboy to Full International.
