Durians have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a child, the excitement would bubble up inside me when my grandfather called us over during durian season. He would buy heaps of them, and our entire family—children, grandchildren, everyone—would gather around, eager to feast. Back then, durians were a luxury, but in my young eyes, they were more than just an indulgence. They were moments of pure joy. We didn’t just eat durians; we savored each piece, letting the creamy, bittersweet flesh melt slowly on our tongues. The rich, almost intoxicating aroma would fill the room, and with each bite, I felt like time itself had slowed down. Even now, the sight of durians brings me a sense of happiness that I can hardly put into words. It’s like reconnecting with a piece of my childhood—those lazy afternoons filled with laughter, family, and that unmistakable scent in the air.

Now that I’ve grown up and started earning my own money, things have changed. Durians have become even more expensive, turning them into a rare indulgence. Each creamy bite feels like I’m consuming gold. The prices seem to rise every season, and before I know it, my wallet feels lighter long before my appetite is satisfied. It’s bittersweet, really. There’s still that excitement, but it’s tinged with a sense of fleeting luxury. I eat it slowly, cherishing every morsel, knowing how fast the money drains with each creamy bite.

So when I got an invitation to visit a durian farm, I was beyond ecstatic! It felt like I had struck gold in a way that money couldn’t buy. Not only did I get to eat as much durian as I could possibly handle, but these weren’t just the regular kampung durians I grew up with. I was in durian heaven—surrounded by premium varieties like Tekka, XO, and other clones with names that I never thought I’d get to taste: D197, D160, D24, D159. Each one was unique, offering a different burst of flavor and texture.

As I walked among the trees, the scent of durians hanging ripe above me, I couldn’t help but feel a childlike thrill. I had to capture this moment, to share this experience with all of you. It wasn’t just about the durians—it was about the memories they unlocked, the luxury they represented, and the simple, unadulterated joy that still blooms in my heart whenever I see them.
