A frequent winner in lists of Britain's best places to live, Bath is perhaps the perfect small city for those in search of a little elegance and refinement. It is the only city in the country to have been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status, which it has earned both for its beautiful Georgian buildings and for its long history as a spa.

There has been a settlement at Bath at least since the Romans arrived; the natural thermal spring sacred to the local goddess Sulis was transformed into a huge Roman bath complex and a temple to Sulis, who was identified with Minerva. The mineral-rich waters and their curative properties had a huge resurgence in the 18th century, and the Georgians flocked to the fashionable town, filling it with their elegant neoclassical architecture: the sweeping Royal Crescent, built in the middle of the century, is the most famous example, and a destination for tourists to this day. Two of Jane Austen's books, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey have sections set in Bath, and the city is a frequent location for adaptations of her novels, and indeed many other TV shows or movies set in the 18th or early 19th centuries, including the Netflix sensation Bridgerton.

Bath is delightfully located, a stone's throw from the busy city of Bristol and the north Devon coast, and surrounded by idyllic Somerset countryside. Head south from Bath and you'll come across the charming villages of Frome and Bruton, packed to the gills with delightful restaurants and art galleries, including Hauser & Wirth. A slightly longer trip takes you to Maiden Bradley and the stand-out pub with rooms The Bradley Hare. Travel north and you're straight into the Cotswolds with its picture-postcard villages, while a drive over the River Severn as it opens out into the sea brings you to the southern end of the Wye Valley on the border between England and Wales. It's also reasonably easy to get to London, with regular trains taking about 1h20 to get to Paddington.
