As part of the 76th Infantry Day celebrations, a wreath-laying ceremony was organised at the National War Memorial in New Delhi on Thursday to honour the heroes of the Infantry, who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation. General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, Lt Gen BS Raju, Vice Chief of Army Staff along with Colonels of the regiments, laid wreaths. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited Budgam in Jammu and Kashmir to participate in the 'Shaurya Diwas' programme organised by the Indian Army. Rajnath extended greetings and warm wishes to the courageous infantry personnel and their families. “Today, on the occasion of 'Shaurya Diwas and Infantry Day', I extend my warm greetings to all the brave soldiers of the Indian Army and Air Force, whose indomitable courage has kept the citizens of India safe,” Rajnath said. “All of you will continue to serve the nation with this valour in future also, I believe,” he added. Further, Rajnath said, “We have to work for the betterment of the country with our mind, word and deed, with a dedicated spirit. This will be the result of celebrating Shaurya Diwas.”

“I am sure that every moment of this initiative will be unforgettable. With such events, the younger generation will be able to get acquainted with the glorious past and valour stories of the nation,” he said. Infantry Day is commemorated on 27 October every year to acknowledge the contributions of the Infantry, the largest fighting arm of the Indian Army. This day has a unique significance for the nation as it was on this day in 1947 that Infantry-men from the Indian Army became the first troops to land at Srinagar airport. They turned back the invaders from the outskirts of Srinagar and saved the state of Jammu and Kashmir from a Pakistan-backed tribal invasion. It was the first military operation of Independent India. This year both the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force are celebrating ‘Shaurya Diwas’. Today also marks the golden jubilee celebration of the Indian Air Force's Kashmir airbase
