- Ananta Kon built Gingee Fort around 1190 AD, which was later fortified by Krishna Kon.
- In the 13th century, the fort was renovated to protect the town of Gingee.
- The Vijayanagar Empire modified and developed Gingee Fort in the 13th century while fighting the Kurumbar kings.
- The Gingee Nayaks, who were lieutenants of the Vijayanagara Empire, built the fort during the 15-16th century.
- In 1677 AD, the Marathas, under Shivaji's leadership, captured the fort from the Bijapur Sultans.
- In 1698, the Mughal Empire captured the fort.
- In 1750, the Carnatic Nawabs lost the fort to the French.
- The British East India Company captured the fort in 1761.
- The Gingee Fort is one of the surviving forts in Tamil Nadu, India, and is now maintained and administered by the Archaeological Survey of India.
- The Gingee Fort complex is on three hillocks: Krishnagiri, Rajagiri and Chakilidurg.
- The fort walls are 13 km long and the three hills are connected by walls enclosing an area of 4.2 sq mi.
