Before Haussmann, Paris was ungovernable. Streets so narrow that midday felt like dusk. Buildings whose upper floors met overhead and blocked the sky. A self-governing criminal quarter — the Cour des Miracles — with its own king, its own economy, its own rules. And one alley so dangerous that the police refused to enter it after dark.

In this video, we trace what was erased — street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood. The 25,000 buildings demolished on the Île de la Cité alone. The foundling hospital that had operated since the 7th century, cleared for a view. The Ventre de Bœuf, a labyrinth of looping alleys where pursuit was geometrically impossible, that somehow survived Haussmann — only to be demolished when the Pompidou Centre was built a century later. The brass star in the Parvis Notre-Dame, the zero-point of all French roads, sitting on top of six hundred years of foundations no surviving map remembers clearly.

And the real reason Haussmann did it — because the old city wasn't just poor. It was defensible by the poor.

The ungovernable city didn't disappear. It relocated.
