Frank Lambert focuses on the evangelistic and entrepreneurial aspects of George Whitefield. Much of Whitefield’s triumphs and battles are relatable to various individuals throughout history who took upon untraditional paths in which others forbid. George Whitfield was a groundbreaking visionary who dared to escape the ordinary; which appealed to a new American public who were in search of their own identity.

In blazing paths and setting new trends comes enemies and scrutiny. Whitefield was banned in the Carolina for preaching the gospel. One of his fiercest opponents, Ebenezer Erskine, was a Scottish evangelist who opposed Whitefield for his refusal to join the Presbyterian Church. George Whitefield was banned from preaching in the churches so he took up barnstorming in the Carolina’s drawing even larger crowds. Whitefield’s opponents ultimately made the same mistake as political opponents of Donald Trump. When a society is told that someone of something is taboo then tactic tends to rally the masses toward that individual. Censorship ultimately backfires on the group attempting to suppress the other party.

Never before had anyone in the evangelical circles utilized commercialism in the way Whitefield exacted via the power of publishers. George Whitefield traveled the early American Colonies armed with a wide array of journals, sermons, pamphlets, and other ephemera. He became a traveling religious bookstore for God spreading the gospel throughout the north and the South. George Whitefield utilized the print publishers to run stories as a tactic to promote his revivals. Contemporary, Josiah Wedgewood, used the same tactic with the newspaper to promote his potting business to the public. The Wedgewood Company is still in business today. We are witnessing a similar situation today in the political arena. Donald Trump’s large-scale marketing tactics of collector coins, limited edition sneakers, merchandise trucks and tents is similar in a way to George Whitefield’s promotion through the print publishers of the 17th century and the sales distributions of his various mediums of literature. No one before dared such strategy, many dissented, and ultimately their tactics proved effective.
