Plaintiff attorneys often get calls about retained objects like sponges and instruments. By “retained,” we mean left inside the patient’s body. What are the procedures needed to prevent this?

In surgeries, multiple counts may be performed after the initial count and before finishing the operation. The first count is typically before the closure of the abdominal cavity to ensure no sponges or instruments have been left in place, including sponges, tools, needles, and small items. However, the surgeon does not stop for the count unless a discrepancy is noted and the surgeon is informed.
