Most writers, whether native speakers or non-native, often find it difficult not to repeat certain words in their essays. Using the same word or words many times makes the writing less interesting and can take away attention from the central message.

This is especially true for the essay on an English exam, such as the IELTS or TOEFL. More importantly, this also affects test-takers’ scores. When you repeat words you risk losing points for Lexical Resource AND for Cohesion & Coherence.

In this video, we look at 3 ways to avoid this. We can synonyms and/or pronouns, or we can restructure our sentences so that we do not require the word at all. See the samples and practice on your own.
