Two weirs on the beautiful River Derwent, both near Winlaton Mill on Tyneside.
The first is 'The Lady's Steps' which was a damhead with mill race to the Crowley Ironworks at Swalwell. The second, about a mile upriver, was also to feed water via a mill race to the Crowley Slitting Mills at Winlaton Mill. Ambrose Crowley started up his ironmongery business in the village of Winlaton in 1690/91 and within a few years extended to Winlaton Mill then Swalwell. In its day it was said to be the biggest integrated industrial operation in Europe and played its part in the beginnings of the industrial revolution.
