Psalm 35 | Chr. Koor Jigdaljahu

During our Easter concert in the Laurenskerk in Rotterdam on April 1st 2024, we sung David's age-old Psalm 35 in the 1773 rhyme. A Psalm that is so old, but still so relevant today.
Psalm 35 is a psalm about injustice and the call to God to do something about it. For help against injustice, deception and war, something we see today in so many places in this world or in our lives.
A cry to God to stand up for those who cannot protect themselves. A call for justice in the face of all the injustice that exists.
A call that sometimes seems to go unanswered, but also a firm belief and trust that injustice will one day be converted into justice and we will be able to praise God for it.
Therefore, “Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant. And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness [and] of thy praise all the day long” (KJV)

Twist met mijn twisters, Hemelheer;
Ga mijn bestrijd'ren toch te keer;
Wil spies, rondas en schild gebruiken,
Om hun gevreesd geweld te fnuiken;
Belet hun d' optocht, treed vooruit;
Zo worden z' in hun loop gestuit.
Vertroost mijn ziel in haar geween,
En zeg haar "'k Ben uw heil alleen".

Laat vromen, juichend t' allen tijd',
Om mijn gerechtigheid verblijd,
Dien lust, dien ijver nooit bedwingen;
Maar zeggen, onder 't vrolijk zingen:
"Verheerlijkt zij de hoogste God;
Hij schenkt Zijn knecht een vreedzaam lot!"

Grijp naar uw schild om mij te dekken,
wil mij aan hun geweld onttrekken.
O God, bied sterke tegenstand,
neem speer en strijdbijl in uw hand,
versla de vijand, spreek tot mij:
Ik zorg voor u, Ik maak u vrij.

Laat vromen juichen, trouwe HEER,
geef, dat zij zingen U ter eer,
die mijn rechtvaardiging verlangen.
Dan klinken blij hun lofgezangen:
Groot is de HERE, onze God.
Hij schenkt zijn knecht een heilrijk lot.
Dan looft mijn tong de hele dag
uw recht, o HEER, met diep ontzag.

Translation:
Strive, Lord, with those who strive with me,
and fight my fight to set me free.
Take shield and buckler, rise in splendour;
come to my aid, be my defender.
Draw out the spear and bar the way
of those who seek me as their prey.
Speak now the reassuring word
that you are my salvation, Lord.

May those rejoice with shout and song
who for my vindication long,
and may they praise with happy voices
the LORD, who in my good rejoices.
Let them repeat how great he is
and laud his perfect righteousness.
Then my tongue, too, with word and song
will praise his justice all day long.
