In the year 1966 Ray Davies had written Dedicated Follower of Fashion for the Manchester United star who was being dubbed the Fifth Beatle.
Ray's plan was that George, the glamour boy of Manchester, would record the song and take it into the charts.
"But United manager Matt Busby put an end to that idea," recalls Davies.
"Busby stepped in and told Best to concentrate on his football and forget any notion of becoming a pop star."
And just for once George did what his manager told him and Dedicated Follower of Fashion looked liked being relegated to the bin.
Then Davies rescued the song, took it to the other Kinks ? his brother Dave, Pete Quaife and Mick Avory ? and they decided if El Beatle couldn't cut the song they'd do it themselves.
Which they did ? and it turned out to be a massive hit for the sixties supergroup.
But both Ray and George always regretted that he had missed out on his chance at pop stardom.
And they remained close friends.
