রংপুরের একটি ফাঁকা বাড়িতে লুকিয়ে রয়েছে হেমচন্দ্র আর ভরত, বারীন কলকাতা চলে গেল টাকার যোগাড় করতে। জমানো টাকা ভাঙিয়ে খেলে আর কদিন চলে? যেহেতু রংপুরে কিছুদিন থাকবে ব্যামফিল্ড ফুলার, তাই হেম আর ভরত রংপুর ছেড়ে যেতে পারছে না। কিন্তু, প্রায় শূন্য হাতেই ফিরে এল বারীন। অরবিন্দের আদেশে তারা ডাকাতি করতে বেছে নিল কাছের এক গ্রাম্য মহাজনকে। আর সেই ডাকাতি করতে গিয়েই একেবারে মৃত্যুর মুখোমুখি হল ভরত। একটা আস্ত বর্শা ঢুকে গেল তার পেটে। ঘনিয়ে এল এ কাহিনির নায়কের অন্তিম দশা। ভরত কি এভাবেই বেঘোরে মরে যাবে?
