Syllabus Requirements
1. Information representation

1.1 Data Representation

Candidates should be able to:

Show understanding of binary magnitudes and the difference between binary prefixes and decimal prefixes
Understand and use the following prefixes:
kibi vs kilo
mebi vs mega
gibi vs giga
tebi vs tera
Show understanding of different number systems:

Use binary, denary (decimal), hexadecimal number bases
Understand Binary Coded Decimal (BCD)
Understand one’s complement and two’s complement representations for binary numbers
Convert an integer value from one number base/representation to another

Perform binary addition and subtraction using positive and negative binary integers

Show understanding of how overflow can occur

Describe practical applications where Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) and hexadecimal are used

Show understanding of and be able to represent character data in its internal binary form, depending on the character set used

Students are expected to be familiar with:

ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange)
Extended ASCII
Unicode
Students will not be expected to memorize any specific character codes

Notes / Guidance (where applicable)

Reinforce distinctions between similar prefixes and bases
Provide practical examples of overflow scenarios
Include hands-on practice with conversion between bases
Include exercises on BCD and hex in real-world contexts
Clarify differences between ASCII, extended ASCII, and Unicode without requiring memorization of codes
