The assassination was the culmination of rising tensions between the Indian government and a section of the Sikh community. The immediate backdrop was Operation Blue Star, a military operation ordered by Gandhi in June 1984 to remove militants, including the separatist leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab. The operation, though successful in its objectives, caused significant collateral damage to the temple, one of the holiest sites in Sikhism, deeply offending many Sikhs worldwide. This led to widespread anger and alienation within the Sikh community.
