Описание к видео UNBOXED: Miné Okubo’s Masterpiece: The Art of Citizen 13660

In 1946, artist Miné Okubo published “Citizen 13660,” an illustrated memoir that captured her experience of being detained in America’s concentration camps during World War II.

The Miné Okubo Collection at the Japanese American National Museum includes hundreds of pencil and ink drawings, as well as notebooks containing brief observations that captured Okubo’s observations of daily life while incarcerated. These materials provided inspiration for many of the drawings and captions included in “Citizen 13660.”

Together, the materials in the collection provide a glimpse into how Miné Okubo witnessed and framed the telling of the World War II incarceration of Japanese and Japanese Americans.

JANM Collections’ UNBOXED series provides a first look at this unique collection and JANM’s exhibition, “Miné Okubo’s Masterpiece: The Art of Citizen 13660,” on view through February 20, 2022.
