This is how I keep my soil good to go year after year. At the end of the growing year leading up to Autumn time I harvest vegetables from the buckets. I put the used soil back in the bucket and cap it off with a layer of 'chop and drop' made up of organic material. The buckets then stand outdoors, uncovered, through the colder months. By the time Spring arrives the following year, most of the organic material has 'disappeared'. The wind and the rain and the snow and the ice have helped it to decompose and the garden worms in the soil have eaten their way through it. The organic matter is now 'in the soil'. This is free-range vermiculture. The worms can stay or go, it's their choice, the goodness is left in the soil.
