LASIK is not painful procedure. It can generate some anxiety however. Sometimes the anxiety is just anticipation people have before the procedure, and once they complete it they are pleasantly surprised by how easy it was. When we're doing LASIK sometimes we will work very close to the face to accomplish resurfacing in the cornea, it can generate some anxiety. Prior to the procedure we treat all of our patients with oral sedation. This greatly helps to alleviate any anxiety people may be feel like heading in to the during the procedure. During the procedure we do everything under topical anesthesia so they don't feel the effects of the laser as it's resurfacing the front surface of their eyes. Once the procedure is completed it's really not necessary to provide any type of opiate or narcotic analgesia. Our patients are told to go home and rest until we can see them the next day. 99% of our people are working and driving and going about their daily lives the next day and pain is virtually never a problem the first day after LASIK.
