BFI Future Film Festival 2021 | Demystifying the Role of the Art Department in a Film Crew

Do you ever find yourself thinking about the visual world of a film long after the credits have rolled? Ever wondered what the Art Department actually does on set? Want to learn how to become a production designer but don’t know where to start?

In this session, we're joined by the Art Department team behind Saint Maud, the chilling and boldly original psychological-horror debut film from writer-director Rose Glass.

The team talked about how they worked together to design and create a bleak and unnerving world of faith, madness and obsession. They revealed how they scouted locations, constructed sets and props, and collaborated with other departments to turn Glass’ vision into a realistic world for the big screen.

The discussion also covered career practicalities such as the differences between various roles and responsibilities within the Art Department, the education, skills and experience required for each role, how to create stand-out portfolios and where to look for entry level roles.

This session was presented by LUX Artists.

Panellists:

• Paulina Rzeszowska - Production Designer, Saint Maud

• Isobel Dunhill - Art Director, Saint Maud
