New Year Diplomatic Exchange: Pakistan, India Share Nuclear Installations Data

Pakistan and India have once again exchanged lists of their nuclear installations, continuing a long-standing confidence-building arrangement that has remained in place for more than three decades. The annual exchange takes place under a bilateral agreement signed in 1988, which commits both countries to inform each other of nuclear facilities every year on January 1.

Speaking at the Foreign Office’s weekly briefing, spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi confirmed that Pakistan handed over its list to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, while India shared its corresponding details with Pakistan’s mission in New Delhi. The agreement came into force in 1991, and the process has continued uninterrupted since 1992.

Alongside this, both sides also exchanged updated lists of prisoners under the 2008 Consular Access Agreement. Pakistan provided India with details of 257 Indian nationals in its custody, including civilians and fishermen.

The briefing also addressed broader regional issues. Pakistan raised concerns over recent Indian hydroelectric projects on western rivers, stressing that any such development must comply with the Indus Waters Treaty.
