Paint a Memorable Idea

This week’s BobBlast is part of an on-going series that addresses how I get started. “Paint a Memorable Idea” is about developing a concept, like painting my Heart Air Balloons, then how I actually execute the idea.

This memorable idea started out years ago—I had accumulated a stack of abstract messes, aka failed paintings. My plan was to gesso over each one and start again. These early abstracts could not have gotten any worse! I had an idea to turn these paintings into something else… a series of hearts using negative shape painting. I figured I had nothing to lose, so my experimentation began! I added more paint to my messes, then with opaque color, I painted everything that didn’t look like a heart!

And so, my Heart Air Balloon series was born. Wanting to go further than simply painting a heart, I had the idea of “a large hot air balloon flying across the land, spreading good heart felt love.” Initially, I thought it was a corny idea, but I liked the overall feeling—my job was to un-cornify it and still convey the idea and story.

My steps for making the Heart Air Balloon paintings:
•Gather my “messes” of abstracts
•Trim them down to all the same size
•Decide on my color combinations
•Mix up a batch of opaque paint
•Negative shape painting—everything that doesn’t look like a heart
•Add landscape, tethers, ladders and clouds

A simple idea… have one at the beginning. Title your painting first and when the painting matches your title, it’s done!
