A visit to Scotland's Cairngorm mountain range during unseasonable autumn snowfall inspired me to pick up my paintbrushes and begin a flurry of new paintings. Watch this to see my paintings of a snow hare and whooper swans take shape and watch magical scenes of these beautiful animals in snow that inspired the new artworks.

Cairngorm mountain range

The wildlife of the Cairngorms is so inspiring. I went in search of wildcats and came back having seen snow hares, red deer and a golden eagle. It was such a magical experience I couldn’t wait to get back to my easel and paint the beautiful creatures I had seen!

Unseasonable snow reveals mountain hares

Mountain hares, animals that normally turn white in winter and are perfectly camouflaged against the snow, were caught out by the early snowfall and were now easy to spot, their chestnut fur covered by just a peppering of white against the winter white.

Vast herds of red deer

But I was really taken aback by the huge herds of red deer I saw. It was the rutting season and I counted one stag with 30 hinds as they cantered across a snow field.

Whooper swans

But one of the most inspirational sightings was a flock of 32 whooper swans swimming in a mountain loch. They looked striking surrounded by the snow-covered mountains. It was incredible to think these beautfiul birds had flown here all the way from Iceland.
